На английском языке. Аннотация:

"t's never easy to face the fact that a man you once loved passionately has found the girl of his dreams, as Alice discovers when Joe introduces her to his new girlfriend. Then Alice finds an old diary and reads about two men and the mysterious woman who bewitched them both, buried in Grantchester churchyard half a century ago.

As the stories seem to intertwine, Alice comes to realize that her instinctive hatred of Joe's new girlfriend may not just be due to jealousy, as she is plunged into a nightmare world of obsession, revenge, seduction - and blood".

Billy Liar

Keith Waterhouse

Billy Liar / Keith Waterhouse: Penguin Books, London, 2010.

На английском языке. Аннотация:

"Penguin Decades bring you the novels that helped shape modern Britain. When they were published, some were bestsellers, some were considered scandalous, and others were simply misunderstood. All represent their time and helped define their generation, while today each is considered a landmark work of storytelling.

Keith Waterhouse's Billy Liar was published in 1959, and captures brilliantly the claustrophobic atmosphere of a small town. It tells the story of Billy Fisher, a Yorkshire teenager unable to stop lying - especially to his three girlfriends. Trapped by his boring job and working-class parents, Billy finds that his only happiness lies in grand plans for his future and fantastical day-dreams of the fictional country Ambrosia".

Роман

Northanger Abbey

Jane Austen

Northanger Abbey / Jane Austen: Penguin Classics, London, 2003.

Introduction by Marilyn Butler , Notes by Marilyn Butler.

На английском языке. Аннотация:

"A witty exploration of the perils of mistaking fiction for reality, Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey" is edited with an introduction and notes by Marylin Butler in "Penguin Classics". During an eventful season at Bath, young, naive Catherine Morland experiences the joys of fashionable society for the first time. She is delighted with her new acquaintances: rude, boorish John Thorpe, his flirtatious sister Isabella, who shares Catherine's love of sensational novels and intrigue, and sophisticated Eleanor and Henry Tilney, who invite her to their father's mysterious house, Northanger Abbey. There, her imagination, influenced by Gothic romances, such as Ann Radcliffe's "The Mysteries of Udolpho", Catherine imagines terrible crimes committed by General Tilney. With its broad comedy and irrepressible, impressionable heroine, this is the most youthful and optimistic of Jane Austen's works.

The "Penguin Classics" edition of "Northanger Abbey" is based on the first edition of 1818, and includes a chronology and additional suggestions for further reading. Jane Austen (1775-1817) was extremely modest about her own genius but has become one of English literature's most famous women writers. Austen began writing at a young age, embarking on what is possibly her best-known work, "Pride and Prejudice", at the age of 22. She was the author of "Sense and Sensibility", "Pride and Prejudice", "Emma", "Persuasion", "Mansfield Park" and "Northanger Abbey". If you enjoyed "Northanger Abbey", you may like Ann Radcliffe's "The Mysteries of Udolpho", also available in "Penguin Classics". "The most perfect artist among women, the writer whose books are immortal". (Virginia Woolf). "These modern editions are to be strongly recommended for their scrupulous texts, informative notes and helpful introductions". (Brian Southam, The Jane Austen Society)".

Expo 58

Jonathan Coe

Expo 58 / Jonathan Coe: Penguin Books, London, 2014.

На английском языке. Аннотация:

"A comic spy caper and international love story, set in Europe in the middle of the last century, Expo 58 is the latest sublime creation by Jonathan Coe, hailed by Nick Hornby as “probably the best English novelist of his generation.”

Handsome, unassuming Thomas Foley is an employee at the Central Office of Information whose particular biography (Belgian mother, pub-owning father) makes him just the man to oversee the “authentic British pub” that will be erected at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. It’s the first major expo after World War II, meant to signify unity, but there’s inevitable intrigue involving the U.S. and Soviet delegations. In the shadow of an immense, imposingly modern structure called the Atomium, the married Foley becomes both agent and pawn—when he’s not falling head over heels for Anneke, his Belgian hostess.

Funny, fast-paced, and genuinely moving, Expo 58 is both a perfect evocation of a moment in history and the welcome return of one of today’s finest novelists".

The Unconsoled

Kazuo Ishiguro

The Unconsoled / Kazuo Ishiguro: Faber&Faber, London, 2013.

На английском языке. Аннотация:

"Ryder, a renowned pianist, arrives in a Central European city he cannot identify for a concert he cannot remember agreeing to give. But then as he traverses a landscape by turns eerie and comical - and always strangely malleable, as a dream might be - he comes steadily to realise he is facing the most crucial performance of his life.

Ishiguro's extraordinary and original study of a man whose life has accelerated beyond his control was met on publication by consternation, vilification - and the highest praise".

На английском языке. Аннотация:

"In this lively and up-to-date analysis of the history of film, David Parkinson traces the evolution of the moving image from the earliest shadow shows to the digital film-making of the 21st century. Engaging text is supplemented by 156 illustrations to give a stimulating account of both aesthetic and technical changes in film since its invention. Well-known films such as Slumdog Millionaire, House of Flying Daggers and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are considered alongside lesser-known releases, placing each film within the broader context of cinematic history. Alongside the film trends in the US, UK, France and Germany, Parkinson highlights the best work to have emerged globally, from Poland and the Czech Republic to Iran and Israel, from India and South Africa to China, Korea, Mexico and New Zealand. With a fully updated glossary and bibliography, History of Film continues to be the definitive survey of this most dynamic and popular art form".

Something To Tell You

Hanif Kureishi

Something To Tell You / Hanif Kureishi: Faber & Faber, London, 2009.

На английском языке. Аннотация:

"In the early 1980s Hanif Kureishi emerged as one of the most compelling new voices in film and fiction. His movies My Beautiful Laundrette and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid and his novel The Buddha of Suburbia captivated audiences and inspired other artists. In Something to Tell You, he travels back to those days of hedonism, activism and glorious creativity. And he explores the lives of that generation now, in a very different London.

Jamal is middle-aged, though reluctant to admit it. He has an ex-wife, a son he adores, a thriving career as a psychoanalyst and vast reserves of unsatisfied desire. "Secrets are my currency," he says. "I deal in them for a living." And he has some of his own. He is haunted by Ajita, his first love, whom he hasn't seen in decades, and by an act of violence he has never confessed.

With great empathy and agility, Kureishi has created an array of unforgettable characters - a hilarious and eccentric theater director, a covey of charming and defiant outcasts and an ebullient sister who thrives on the fringe. All wrestle with their own limits as human beings; all are plagued by the past until they find it within themselves to forgive.

Comic, wise and unfailingly tender, Something to Tell You is Kureishi's best work to date, brilliant and exhilarating".
